Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is a process that uses tiny, sharp needles to create a microscopic wound in the skin stimulates your body’s healing response: i.e., to create new collagen. It has become exceedingly popular all over the world due to its easy accessibility, low cost relative to other procedures for wrinkles, scars and overall texture of the skin, excellent safety, and low downtime.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling is effectively used for:

  • Reducing scars (including hypertrophic scars) caused by acne, surgery or thermal burns
  • Fading stretch marks
  • Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Improving unwanted pigmentation
  • Improving overall skin texture, tone, and appearance

What to expect during Microneedling

First, we apply a topical numbing cream to the patient’s skin to keep them comfortable during the procedure. Then we apply a light layer of enzyme gel to lubricate your skin and make the Microneedling pen glide more smoothly. Next, we roll the Microneedling pen over the patient’s skin creating tiny holes in the surface. As of huge fan of microneedling myself, I would describe it a vibrating sensation- if I feel anything at all.

This process typically takes less than 30 minutes, and afterward, your skin can be somewhat red, similar to a sunburn. Within two days the redness is mostly resolved and your skin returns to normal, but the results gradually become apparent. Natural collagen growth happens over weeks and months, so it isn’t an instant fix, but your skin will be much improved in the long run.

When will you see results from Microneedling?

One thing to know, though: You’ll need more than one treatment. This isn’t a one-time event. Depending on the skin areas treated (we can treat the face, neck, abdomen, and other areas) and what you’re trying to achieve, somewhere between 3-6 treatments are typically required for optimal results. And those looking to treat deep wrinkles, stretch marks, severe sun damage or scarring may need 6+ treatments.

Patients may notice healthier looking skin right away. However, keep in mind that dermal collagen remodeling occurs over time and it would not be realistic to expect damage that has happened to the skin over a long period of time to disappear right away. We suggest a series of 3-5 sessions spaced 6 weeks apart. Individuals may not see final results until 3-6 months following the last appointment.
