Qbrexa, MiraDry, and Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating in the axilla (underarms), is not life-threatening, but it can be profoundly life-altering. People who suffer from extreme cases of excessive sweating find that it affects the social, emotional and occupational aspects of their lives.

What is Qbrexa

The FDA recently approved a prescription-only drug designed to treat axillary hyperhidrosis called Qbrexza (or Qbrexza Cloth). Qbrexa was released to the public this October.

How Does Qbrexa Work?

Qbrexa cloth is applied directly to the skin of the underarms and is designed to block sweat production by inhibiting sweat gland activation. The cloth is applied every 24 hours and should only be used on clean, dry skin- never on irritated or broken skin.

Who Can Use Qbrexa?

Qbrexa is designed for those who suffer with excessive underarm sweating. Clinical trials were completed on children 9 years of age and up. It is important to remember this is a prescription drug and should only be used if prescribed by your doctor.

Does Qbrexa Actually Work?

Clinical trials were completed over a one year time span. The patients who treated with Qbrexa reported a significant decrease in sweat and an increase in quality of life. Between 72% and 77% of patients reported a reduction in excessive perspiration, with about a 50% decrease in sweat volume. Qbrexza is a new, powerful drug that can reduce or eliminate underarm perspiration- But, it’s active ingredient, glycopyrronium, can bring with it the likelihood of unwanted side effects.

Alternative Treatments

There are traditional treatments available which include:

  • Antiperspirants: These can plug the ducts that release sweat.
  • Medicines: Prescription medication can keep sweat glands from being stimulated.
  • Iontophoresis: This is a procedure that uses electricity to turn off the sweat gland temporarily.
  • Botox: When the underarm is injected with Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) the nerves which stimulate sweating get blocked.
  • Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS): This is an invasive surgical procedure that involves cutting a nerve to turn the signal off which communicates to the body to sweat.
  • Underarm surgery: This surgery completely removes sweat glands from the armpits.

Alternatives to Surgery?

There is, however, an alternative to surgery that can permanently eliminate unreasonable underarm sweat. The only FDA-approved procedure, miraDry, is available and helping many people who have had lives affected by excessive sweating. MiraDry is a non-invasive procedure that eliminates sweat and odor glands in the underarms permanently. Results are immediate after the procedure is completed.

MiraDry

As the first and only non-invasive treatment to permanently eliminate underarm sweat and odor glands, miraDry has become one of our more popular treatments at Soine Dermatology. With national statistics as well as our own personal success, MiraDry has been nothing short of a miracle worker for our patients struggling with excessive sweating and/or odor in the underarms. Perhaps best of all, we tell our patients that they can expect to see immediate, lasting, and permanent results.

How Does miraDry Work?

The miraDry treatment involves applying electromagnetic energy to the area of the underarms where the sweat glands are located. The process takes only about an hour to two hours to complete, and the results can be seen immediately afterward.

There are some side effects which include a feeling of numbness that diminishes in a week and localized soreness of the treated area that is only temporary. The downtime following the miraDry treatment is minimal. A person can resume normal activities after the procedure. Typically, after several days an individual may return to exercising regularly.

If you suffer with excessive sweating from the underarm or disagreeable odors, you do not have to continue suffering. miraDry is beneficial and proven to be an effective treatment for underarm hyperhidrosis. It can return your confidence and give you an overall feeling of cleanliness with lasting results. Contact Soine Dermatology today to see if miraDry or Qbrexa is right for you!
